Earthenware: mineral washes, underglaze and glaze
Bali, Indonesia Series- 10"x8"x10"
First in the series, this piece captures the spirit of waves crashing against the Echo Beach breakwater near where our honeymoon villa was located.
There are two waves intertwined in a spiral against a cubic and pyramidal reference.
Water was obviously the predominate instigator in my Bali Series.

The NaXi words here represent, (bottom up) Buckwheat, think, and Hilltop.
Snow mountain dominates the landscape, watching over the NaXi and their heritage.
Staying in a traditional wooden guest house, the morning view resembled this scene.
The 'fleur de lis' element represents 'beautiful' in NaXi.
Swiftly running streams fed the land. Old man's beard crept everywhere, floating in the trees like jade rags hung out to dry.

Unique among my experiences, the resort like atmosphere atop the Giant monolithic rock at Uluwatu Beach stands out. Shaking each time it split a wave, I never dropped my cocktail watching the Sunset.
The clouds use Balinese representational elements found nearby at Pura Luhur temple, while the fragmentation speaks of the unstable platform the viewer is perched upon.
The relief element is derived from the Elephant God gateway carvings at the Pura Luhur temple.

Walking along the boardwalk in Sanur, the viewer would notice how the water breaks 300 meters off shore on a coral reef making the wave action here seem to be always coming or going never reaching shore.
The enclosure should evoke thoughts of a traditional Balinese roof, angled and palm frond adorned.
Sanur also was where most of the 5-star resorts were located. On one side of the boardwalk were these beautiful traditional architectures and the other was the ocean.

Arriving at 1,800 meters above sea level. One is asked if they want to descend 1,000 meters to the water, where the legendary tiger leapt across.
Sweating as the temperature has risen 20'F, the local villagers offer you a place to rest, halfway down the trail.
The Yunnan series had much more of a wooden bark element and mountain peak combination with water intertwining them together.
The water boils violently and I never met a tiger that could leap that far.

One approaches Uluwatu Beach from the top of a cliff, unable to view the numerous bodegas and cafes clinging to the steep cliff face below. The unobstructed horizon on one shoulder, the cliff face on the other, switching back and forth as you descend stopping to let others pass sometimes one at a time.
The lower one gets, the more the clouds focus in above as the path shoots through a fissure in the rock. The walls are slick with vegetation. Water runs in and out below rumbling and vibrating eardrums along with sandals.
The last fifty feet traverse a freestanding cast concrete staircase (seen lower right) with no railings. Waiting by turn one notices others once at the bottom crawling on their knees through a small opening in the low tide rock face.
Where the unveiled sunset and open horizon again welcome with warmth and wonder.
